Glastonbury 2018

This year's LMS pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady, St Mary of Glastonbury, took place on Saturday 8th September, the Birthday of the Blessed Virgin.

Father Bede Rowe, the Rector of the Shrine, was the Celebrant at the Solemn High Mass. Father Philip Thomas was Deacon, and Sebastian Crawford, a seminarian with the Institute of the Good Shepherd, was subdeacon. Rupert Bevan and his choir provided the music, which included Byrd's Mass for Five Voices and Tallis' O Sacrum Convivium, as well as the Gregorian chants of the Mass.

Fr Rowe preached on the historical and cultural importance of the Glastonbury shrine, which has been in existence since the earliest years of Christianity. He pointed out that the monks across the road at the Abbey, before the Schism of the 16th century, would have known by heart the same Mass of the Blessed Virgin as was being sung at the pilgrimage.

After lunch, we prayed the Glorious mysteries of the Rosary in the Lady Chapel of Glastonbury Abbey, led by Deacon Michael Belt. The day concluded with Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, confessions and Benediction in the Shrine Church.

We would like to thank all those who made this pilgrimage possible, particularly Father Rowe and the Shrine Manager, Kim Woolmer, for her support on the day.

We would like to extend our thanks to Fr Allen, and to His Excellency Bishop Declan Lang, for bringing the Mass according to the Traditional Roman Rite back to Bristol after a hiatus of sixteen months. Approximately 24 people were at the first Mass, including some who had not attended this form of the Mass in the last 40-50 years.

Mass at the Chaplaincy will continue every Sunday at 12:30pm, unless otherwise announced. All are welcome to attend.

Mass changes in Gloucestershire

Father Ian McCarthy, Parish Priest of Our Lady & St Kenelm, Stow-on-the-Wold, will shortly be retiring. Father McCarthy has been celebrating regular Masses in the Old Rite in Stow, and also at St Gregory's, Cheltenham, for several years now, and we would like to thank him for his support for Catholic Tradition in the north of the Diocese.

Sadly, however, this means that there will be no more Traditional Masses in Stow and Cheltenham for the time being. The last Mass at St Gregory's will be on Wednesday, 4th April, at the usual time of 7pm.

There have also been some changes to the schedule at Prinknash Abbey. The Abbot and his Council have made the decision that the weekly Low Mass on Saturdays at 11am is to cease, and in its place there will be a Mass on the first Sunday of each month at 3pm, and one on the third Saturday of each month at 11am. Masses will continue to be celebrated by Father Mark Hargreaves.

Your prayers are requested for the happy repose of the soul of Dom Damian Sturdy, of Prinknash Abbey, who died on 19th March. Father Damian reintroduced the Traditional Mass to Prinknash in 2002, and celebrated it regularly until around 15 months ago, when he retired to Nazareth House, Cheltenham.

Tuesday 27 March 2018

Easter Mass at Downside

The annual Downside High Mass will be celebrated on Saturday 2nd June this year, in the Abbey Church. Dom Boniface Hill will be Celebrant, and the music will be provided by the St John's Festival Choir from Bath.

Further details to follow.
